No, it’s not the same thing. Sodium Lauryl sulfate (same as SLS, SDS etc) is a very strong detergent and is what gives soaps their very foamy lather characteristics and their strong oil stripping abilities. Lauryl laurate is not a detergent, it is an additive that makes products feel slipperier and spread better.

    Hey Lolita!
Well here’s the deal, Jade is right, any laurate is a chemical composition – there really is nothing natural about it. It all goes back to the chemistry of these preservatives. If it doesn’t come from a plant, earth, or air, it’s not natural. Some compounds are found in the earth, such as essential minerals, but these “laurates” no good for the skin. Our skin has a natural pH, especially sensitive facial skin, so it isn’t as abrasive on the body, which is why almost all body lotions contain it. If you’re looking for products laurate free and paraben free try Burt’s Bees products.
    Hope that helps!!!

Don’t use anything with sodium laureths on your face!!! It’s an added preservative to extend the shelf life of products and cosmetics. It can be a harmful irritant to facial skin! Any laurate is still a chemical composition, not good for skin!
