Parabens – An estrogen mimic, parabens are preservatives with antibacterial properties. Widely used in all kinds of personal care products, paraben is usually preceded by the prefixes methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, or propyl-. Parabens can cause allergic reactions or contact dermatitis in some people. Preservatives are one of the leading causes of contact dermatitis. There are safer practical alternatives to parabens, including vitamin E, vitamin C and grapefruit seed extract.
Parabens are alarming because they are considered Xenoestrogens – synthetic compounds that act like the sex hormone estrogen. The following prefixes are often associated with parabens on labels for common household items: methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl. They are widely used in foods, pharmaceuticals, toiletries and cosmetics.
Cosmetic products have potentially the highest doses of parabens, as the products pass directly into the bloodstream, missing the gastrointestinal tract where they could have the chance to break down. Some 13,2Ǡ cosmetic products are said to contain some form of parabens.
When used by pregnant Mothers, parabens have been linked to premature sexual development in girls and marked increased birth defects and reproductive abnormalities in boys. Early in 2004, English researchers found parabens in samples of breast tumors. The lead researcher, Dr. Phillippa Darbre, a molecular biologist at the University of Reading in Edinburgh, found that the form of parabens found in 18 of the Ǵ tumors tested indicated that they originated from something applied to the skin – most likely deodorants or antiperspirants. As breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, we must educate ourselves when it comes to any and everything we can do to prevent this horrible disease.

It depends on the manufacturer. Usually, it’s mica although sometimes it is fish scales. And possibly other things but I believe that mica is on eof the most common.
No danger is posed by having mica in makeup. Although, if you are allergic to fish you may react to products with fish scales. (Can people be allergic to just fish? I can’t remember.)
eta: I was just looking to see if I could find other things about this. And apparently a few people have reported having reactions to makeup with mica in them. These were supposed to be rare as stated in my very unreliable source, I think it was an ebay shop page selling makeup.

I know people say hydrocortisone can thin out skin but I feel that over-the-counter use to control eczema for a few days should be safe. I prefer to use this instead of protopic as it as a black box cancer label. However, I don’t want to risk thinning out my skin after say, 25 years. I am unable to find any articles regarding over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream – only prescription strength steroids (which do indeed thin out skin).

A lot of cosmetic products seem to have benzyl alcohol in their ingredients. Is this a bad thing?
